Measuring Revenue
Referral Attribution
Also known as: referral tracking, word-of-mouth attribution
- Custom Home Builders
- Home Services
Definition
Referral attribution is the practice of recording which leads and sales came from referrals, and who referred them, so word of mouth can be measured alongside paid and digital marketing. Without it, referral business is invisible in your reports and the marketing that supports it gets undervalued.
For custom home builders
For many custom home builders, referrals from past clients, architects, realtors, and lenders are the largest source of signed contracts. They are also the hardest to see. A referred buyer often still visits your website, searches your name, and fills out a form, so digital tools credit the website or a branded search instead of the person who sent them.
Tracking referrals properly shows you who your best referral partners are, lets you thank them, and reveals how much your website and reputation support word of mouth. A referred buyer who finds a weak website may never call.
For home services
Home service companies get referrals from neighbors, past customers, and other trades. Asking "how did you hear about us?" on every call and form, and recording the referrer's name, is usually enough. It also makes a referral reward program possible, because you know who to reward.
How to measure and improve it
- Ask every lead. Add "How did you hear about us?" to forms and call scripts, with "Referral" as an option and a field for the referrer's name.
- Record referral partners in your CRM. Architects, realtors, lenders, and past clients each get a contact record so referrals can be linked to them.
- Keep the referral as a source, even if they found you online. A self-reported referral should not be overwritten by a website visit.
- Report signed revenue by referrer. This shows your most valuable relationships.
- Close the loop with the referrer. A thank-you, and an update when the project signs, encourages the next referral.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't referrals show up in my marketing reports?
Most referred buyers still visit your website or search your company name before reaching out, so analytics tools credit the website visit or the branded search. Only asking the lead directly, and recording the answer, reveals the referral behind it.
How do custom home builders track referrals?
Ask how each lead heard about you, capture the referrer's name, and keep referral partners like architects, realtors, and past clients as contacts in your CRM. Link each referred lead to its referrer, then report signed contracts by referral source.
Does marketing matter if most of my business comes from referrals?
Yes. Referred buyers almost always check you out online before calling. A strong website, good reviews, and visible recent work turn referrals into consultations. Marketing also keeps you in front of past clients and partners, which is what generates more referrals.
