Measuring Revenue

Marketing Attribution

Also known as: attribution modeling, multi-touch attribution, lead source attribution

  • Custom Home Builders
  • Solar

Definition

Marketing attribution is the method of assigning credit for a lead or sale to the marketing touchpoints that influenced it, such as an ad, a search, a social post, or a referral. It tells you which channels deserve the credit, and the budget, for the customers you win.

For custom home builders

A custom home buyer rarely converts from a single touch. They might see a social post, search your name months later, read three project pages, attend an open house, and finally fill out a form after a friend mentions you. Each attribution model tells a different story about that same buyer, which is why the choice matters.

For builders, the practical approach is to always record the original source and the source of the lead conversion, and to review both. First touch shows what creates awareness; last touch shows what closes the gap. Neither alone tells the whole story over a long buying cycle.

For solar

Solar buyers often research across several sources before booking an appointment. Attribution helps separate channels that create interest, like content and social, from those that capture it, like search ads and purchased leads, so you do not cut the first while over-crediting the second.

How to measure and improve it

Common models:

  • First touch: all credit to the first interaction. Good for understanding awareness.
  • Last touch: all credit to the final interaction before conversion. The default in many tools.
  • Linear: equal credit to every touch.
  • Position-based (U-shaped): most credit to the first and last touches, the rest spread between.

Getting started: capture sources consistently with UTMs, form fields, and call tracking; keep one CRM record per person; and connect attribution to revenue through closed-loop reporting, so credit is assigned to sales and not just form fills.

Frequently asked questions

Which attribution model is best?

There is no single best model. For long buying cycles like custom homes, looking at both first touch and last touch, or using a position-based model, gives a more honest picture than last touch alone. Pick one primary model, apply it consistently, and compare against a second view.

What is the difference between attribution and closed-loop reporting?

Closed-loop reporting connects sales results back to marketing data. Attribution decides how to divide credit for those results among the touchpoints involved. Attribution without closed-loop reporting can only credit leads, not revenue.

How do you attribute referrals and word of mouth?

Ask every new lead how they heard about you, record the answer in your CRM, and capture the name of the referrer when there is one. Referrals will never show up in ad platform data, so this step is the only way to see them.
